This summer, my husband and I were very excited for the birth of my first baby. Luciana was born in mid-July this year. This was the best moment of our lives. We were both first-time and inexperienced parents. We learned many important details about the care of a baby, one of them being how to feed the baby. In the hospital, we were told that I needed to supplement Luciana with formula, in addition to breastfeeding. A hospital’s pediatrician and nurse explained to us that I had to feed the baby with cow’s milk-based infant formula while my milk supply ramped up with time.

Even though we visited a pediatrician after being discharged from the hospital, we were unaware that Luciana had a cow’s milk protein allergy. We kept feeding Luciana for a few days, but we were concerned that Luciana had colic after every breastfeeding and supplemental milk feeding. Colic is a possible indication of cow’s milk allergy. Colic may occur as a delayed reaction within a few hours or days of consuming cow’s milk protein.

After a couple of visits and calls to the pediatrician, we came to the conclusion that we needed a second opinion. Hence, we visited another local clinic. We expressed our concerns to this new pediatrician and she more diligently examined our little one. The tests revealed that there was hidden blood in the baby’s dirty diapers, so she requested me to stop consuming dairy products and recommended a hypoallergenic infant formula for our child.

We fed Luciana for a week or so, but we did not notice any improvement. Luciana, particularly, did not tolerate this infant formula.

We went back to the pediatrician and she recommended Nutramigen® with Enflora™ LGG®. We were really hoping this infant formula would help our baby’s feeding issues. Within a few days we were very happy for Luciana because she was smiling and was playful.

Luciana is now content after every breastfeeding and after being fed with Nutramigen®. Her stools are normal again. We are very thankful to the pediatrician, as well as to Nutramigen® infant-formula. It’s easy-to-digest and reduces gas, crying and disturbed sleep (due to cow’s milk allergy) for a happier, better rested baby and mom. Even though my milk volume has increased tremendously in the past three months from the delivery, I will continue to use Nutramigen®. Sometimes I need a full night sleep or need to get something done or, in case I were sick or injured, I know that my husband can bottle feed Luciana with this amazing product. Nutramigen® with Enflora™ LGG® is the only nutritionally complete, hypoallergenic formula with probiotic LGG for babies with cow’s milk allergy. My husband and I have learned that if we have another baby in the future with colic due to cow’s milk allergy, we will definitely talk to the doctor about Nutramigen®. Nutramigen® with Enflora™ LGG® is the only formula with 3-in-1 allergy benefits published in clinical studies. Fast relief: Starts working as early as the first feeding and reduces crying within 48 hours.* Fewer allergies: ~50% less chance of experiencing other allergies like asthma & eczema.† Fast return to cow’s milk: 1.8x more babies return to milk protein in as early as after 6 months of feeding.‡

I really hope all of you learn from our first-time parents’ experience and see the importance in working with your baby’s doctor to find the right formula for your baby. Future parents may find this information useful, or there even might be first-time parents in the same situation as my husband and me. I leave you with another important fact about cow’s milk allergy: Most children naturally outgrow cow’s milk allergy by 3-5 years of age. But with Nutramigen LGG®‡, almost 60% babies can digest cow’s milk without an allergic reaction after 6 months of feeding and 80% after a year.

Footnotes:

*Studied before the addition of DHA, ARA, or LGG.

†Lower likelihood of exhibiting asthma, eczema, rhinoconjunctivitis, or urticaria at 3 years compared to Nutramigen without LGG.

‡When compared to Nutramigenwithout LGG.
